Ski Resort Jobs In The Alps For Nannies And Childcare Staff
There are two main ways to get a job before you go caring for children in a ski resort. Find work through an au pair or nanny agency or get yourself hired by a tour operator or chalet company.
There is no shortage in this world of children or jobs looking after them. If you are the right age and gender (girls always find childcare work far easier than boys) and desire an au pair position in, for example, Italy but do not mind where, an agency will be only too happy to round you up, hand you your ticket and send you on your way.
Somewhere more specific, say Rome or Florence, might require a little more waiting before the right job can be found for you, but found one will be. But contemplate working above the snowline and the competition starts getting fierce.
Nanny Agencies
There are hundreds of au pair and nanny agencies out there. A fair number can be found in or via the au pair and nanny pages of our directory but unless they have clients on their books living in a ski resort the chances of finding a job amongst the cold white stuff is zip.
While I’m sure many agencies do have such clients from time to time, My Travelling Nanny specifically states they offer child carers to parents living or visiting the Alps. They advertised in the Jobs Abroad Bulletin a few years ago and while the ad has long expired it still gives a good idea of their requirements.
There are an increasing number of agencies that specialise in recruiting nannies for ski resorts. Most are based in French ski resorts and established by avid skiers spotting a gap in the market, often inspired by their own difficulties in finding good childcare for their own children. Most child carers are placed with smaller tour operators, chalet companies and hotels catering to British and other foreign tourists.
Qualifications vary from agency to agency but while babysitting experience will be enough for most au pair agencies the ante is upped for wannabe Alpine nannies. Expect to need an EU passport, between six months and two years experience in a working environment, enhanced CRB disclosure, a first aid certificate and a childcare qualification such as NVQ, BTEC or equivalent, to be aged over 21 and speak English.
Non smoking drivers with food hygiene knowledge, cooking skills and other languages will be especially sought after. Nannies do not need to be qualified or expected to teach or accompany children on skis.
In return, successful applicants will receive free accommodation, flights, food, days off to ski, access to ski equipment, a lift pass and maybe a contract completion bonus.
Some agencies provide nannies to their local area only. Morzine has Cheeky Monkeys and the Portes du Soleil ski resort – including the village of Champery over the border in Switzerland – is served by Jack Frosts.
Merinannies started in Meribel but has expanded its operations across the 3 Valleys and into the Mont Blanc and Grand Massif ski areas. They can also place nannies in Switzerland and Austria and once the snow melts in summer resorts in Greece, Portugal and France.
Hard times recently seem to have done for a number of other agencies that once could have provided work in France but Jelly and Ice Cream are still around. Try them if looking to work in Val d’Isère, Tignes, Sainte Foy, Meribel and Courchevel.
Alpine Resort Nannies cover Morzine, Les Gets and Châtel. Their website wasn’t updated from last year when we last looked but they will have been recruiting since mid April. They make summer placements too.
We missed Alpine Child Care when we first wrote this post on an earlier version of our blog but they left a comment asking for inclusion so here they are. They act as an introductory agent, connecting self employed nannies with families looking for child care for their ski holidays.
Tour Operators & Chalet Companies
Numerous tour operators and independent chalet companies hire their own childcare staff directly. If a company deals in family holidays then it is likely they will need childcare staff to keep an eye on their holidaymakers’ children in one form or another. This can be either in a traditional one on one or small group nanny role or more along the lines of keeping the kids amused and occupied in a children’s club.
Qualifications vary depending on the role. Nannies will require much the same qualifications and experience as nanny agencies do but children’s club reps will only need their background checked, a first aid certificate and bags of enthusiasm and energy. Most British tour operators working on the continent now require staff to have an EU passport. EU nationals should also start checking the websites of ski companies offering family holidays to their fellow citizens.
At the larger end of the market Crystal Holidays, part of the TUI group recruits via careers.tuigroup.com/crystal-jobs. They have several ski resort roles for childcare staff, including nannies, childcare supervisors and children’s club leaders and assistants. Crystal operates in almost all European winter destinations including Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland, and also Andorra, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Spain and further afield in the USA, Canada and Japan.
Esprit Ski focuses their ski operation in the Alps only and sends holidaymakers to 11 resorts across France and another five in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. They state: “All our nurseries are run by professionally qualified Nursery Nurses – NNEB, B Tech, NVQ 2/3, CACHE DCE 3 or equivalent trained.” Most nurseries also have nursery assistants to support the nannies. Esprit has a dedicated recruitment site at www.workaseason.com.
The Work a Season site also handles the recruitment for the Ingham brand and the Scandinavia centric Santa’s Lapland. From a childcare perspective, the most interesting position is Lapland Elf. No childcare qualifications are required for this role (but it is desirable). Instead, Lapland elves should have acting, theatre or drama experience and qualifications, and customer service experience.
Two other larger tour operators are Mark Warner and Neilson. Mark Warner nannies are based in the crèche in one of their hotels in Austria, France and Italy. Nannies should be qualified or have two years full time childcare experience. Your responsibility will be to provide fun, creative and safe activities for children from four months to 12 years. Activities can include snowman building, hot chocolate trips and sledging. Head nannies with supervisory knowledge and organisational skills in all aspects of creche/nursery management are also wanted. Neilson‘s childcare roles are for nannies and children’s club staff.
Nanny positions in six French ski resorts are offered on a rota basis by Ski Beat, either in their crèche, afternoon childcare or as a private nanny with children aged three months to seven years. Ski Beat nannies have two free days off each week to enjoy skiing and only have to babysit one evening during the week.
Another company to try is Scott Dunn which has come a long way from operating out of a terraced house in Tooting Bec that I used to walk past on the way to the pub. Smaller companies that operate in a handful of resorts to try are Family Ski Company and Ski Famille, Alp Leisure and VIP Ski.
Other resort operations looking for childcare staff include Purple Ski (Meribel and Val d’Isère) and Premier Neige (St Foy). Another prospect, Simon Butler Skiing, has finally been beaten by Covid despite the owner winning his court case to continue teaching in France, after receiving fines of thousands of euros and a suspended prison sentence.
Ski Season Recruitment Websites
We list numerous ski tour operators and ski resort websites in our directory and also carry job listings on the Jobs Abroad Bulletin website. Other good sites to try are Season Workers and Ski-Jobs.co.uk.

Ski Jobs Available This Week
Ski resort employers often post their vacancies to the Jobs Abroad Bulletin but we are not so grand to realise that not everyone advertises their jobs with us. To get around this we lurk on other websites and, like scabby street cats dragging a piece of discarded chicken bone under a bin, we regularly pounce on any vacancy we spot that has been left lying around elsewhere.
Unlike the scabby street cats we are into sharing our findings, so keep checking this newsletter or our Ski Jobs category for what we find.
TUI recently announced its winter work opportunities for 2022/2023. Go to https://careers.tuigroup.com/jobs and tick Holiday Destination Jobs to see what is available.
You’ll have to join the private Facebook Ski/Summer Industry Jobs group to see Elysian Collection’s ads for Chefs and chalet hosts to work this winter in their chalets in the ski resort of Zermatt, Switzerland. The same goes to see more information about an experienced stand alone professional chef needed for the winter season in a privately owned, non commercial, 19 bed chalet situated in Servoz in the Chamonix valley.
Ski Famille are also currently active in the same group, looking for chalet hosts and chalet chef. More information can be found on their website: https://www.skifamille.co.uk/ski-jobs/. On the question of whether they accept UK passports, their answer is #yesyesyes. Their experienced office team will do all the hard work and support you through the process of obtaining a visa.
We have seen Ski Familie advertising with Cool Ski Jobs for other positions. On the same site, Getaway Vans are hoping to round up some airport transfer drivers to join their team in Morzine.
In the same resort, applicants that appreciate how small businesses operate, excel in customer facing roles and have a positive attitude may find their face fits with Treeline Chalets.
Skibound have started its recruitment process, wanting Clubhotel general assistants, kitchen porters, night porters, hotel managers, assistant hotel managers, French speaking bar people and all levels of chefs. Visit www.getupandgojobs.com.
Mountain Heaven, an independent family owned company have been providing catered and self catered skiing holidays in the French and Swiss Alps for almost 20 years. They want candidates either with previous professional catering experience or who have completed a cookery course to provide quality home made breakfasts, afternoon tea including cakes and a three/four course evening meal to their guests. More on their chalet host role here.
Massage Me, a mobile massage company in the Alps, will be aiming to wow customers with their faultless service and awesome skills. They need a team on board who are excited by what they do and want to be part of the challenge. Go to https://www.massage-me.com/recruitment to find out more and apply.
We missed out Meribel Nanny Services in this month’s lead post on childcare jobs in the Alps. Never mind, you can find out more about their childcare agency based in the Meribel and Courchevel Valley on their website, where, other than mentioning their exhaustive recruitment process in the off season looking for friendly, experienced, enthusiastic and energetic individuals, they don’t provide a job description. A gander at their Facebook page will fix that.
On the Ski-Jobs website, Alpine Action was recently looking for a driver/handyman, while Up the Alps needs a chalet cook/host/housekeeper.
Buildmyskitrip.com are recruiting for chalet hosts/couples and ski resort managers via Season Workers.
Golden Goose Recruitment have work for chalet managers in the French, Swiss and Austrian Alps listed on their website.
European Pubs are calling all bartenders, servers, chefs, hotel assistants and anyone with a passion for hospitality to work in the 3 Valleys.
Here’s an application form for the Saloon Group, made up of Saloon, Downunder, The Frog, Snesko, Favela & Summit in Val Thorens. Be quick. They say Interview slots are filling up fast.
Kaluma Ski wants chalet hosts, chefs, and drivers for roles in St. Anton and Courchevel. Check out their latest blog (dated nearly a month ago but we’ve seen them active in Facebook groups more recently) for more information on what it’s like to work for them. Send your CV with a covering letter and a recent photo to recruitment@kalumatravel.co.uk.
The Oxygene Ski & Snowboard School is looking for its next talents in the French Alps, inviting ski, snowboard, monoski, ski touring, telemark instructors, etc to come and show them your special skills. They are happy to welcome trainees, aspirants and graduates and to see you evolve.
Dominik Lacko, who worked his way up from being a kitchen porter and describes himself as a freelancer in hospitality recruitment and talent sourcing industry, is active in several ski industry groups. He has work in English speaking hotels in several French ski resorts. See his graphic for more details.
Spoony Cooks want experienced chefs (breakfast, line and sous) to work year round in Morzine. Having the right to work in France is advantageous but visa permits could be obtained for the right candidates.
New Generation is an international ski and snowboard school that operates in France, Switzerland, and Austria. Earlier this week they were looking for customer support administrators to join them in Courchevel 1650 for the winter 2022-23 season. They have a careers page at https://www.skinewgen.com/careers/.
Alpine Shine last week wanted experienced, hard working cleaning assistants with excellent attention to detail to work within an experienced team over the coming winter season.
If the current heatwave in Europe is leaving you tempted to the mountains for this winter season, drop an updated CV to jemima@silverswanrecruitment.com.
Hope For Brits Working In The French Alps
We were perhaps a little negative in May’s The Working Traveller about the prospects for Brits wanting to land a ski job in the Alps.
There is some hope for British seasonaires in France if they can demonstrate strong relevant experience. SBIT (Seasonal Businesses in Travel) have been raising awareness of the issue and report that applications for work permits in France have got decidedly easier than during the first winter of our Brexit.
They shared with Ski Weekends that the application has moved online and the process is as follows:
“Step 1: Apply for and secure a job with a UK Ski company Step 2: Your employer will apply for a Work Permit for you, you cannot do this yourself Step 3: Your employer will help you apply for your Work Visa.”
Andy Cox, commenting in the Ski Resort Jobs Facebook group described his experience: “I’d say you’ll probably see a few more saying UK passport accepted for the right candidate. I have gone through the process to get my seasonal visa in France (need to be supported by a company) and its possible, a bit long winded but possible whereas this time last year no one actually knew if it was possible.”
He went on to say “The process started in London for a 3 month visa, then whilst in France had to do a medical, lung scan and two meetings at the prefecture with lots of paper work. Literally picked up the visa on Mon. It's a long process.”
Cool Ski Jobs also have some advice on the matter at https://www.coolskijobs.com/how-to-get-a-ski-job-in-the-eu-after-brexit/.
While the situation is still certainly dire compared to before Brexit, we are starting to see more ski businesses willing to accept British passport holders. Out of 30 SBIT members (see below) 13 stated on their websites that, to a varying degree, they were prepared to help ski season workers from the UK apply for the relevant paperwork.
SBIT Members’ Ski Recruitment Pages
While on the SBIT website we ran all their members through Google and have linked to their recruitment pages below in a nice, quick view list. We’ve asterisked those that mention they will accept British passport holders to at least some degree.
There’s a little bit of doubling up here with some of these websites already mentioned in the posts above but we added this last minute and don’t have time to muck about rewriting the newsletter.
Normally, we would have done this for the next issue of The Working Traveller, to keep ski recruitment in focus, but we’ll be moving about a bit over the next few months and don’t expect to do another until October when most ski companies will have all the staff they need for the 2022/23 winter season.
These pages are for future reference and the companies are not necessarily recruiting right now but we thought a simple list would be useful in itself without your having to read through a clunky introduction to the post. Oh!

International Irish Pub Jobs
Irish pubs are a great way to plug into the local expat network, enjoy the craic and perhaps get word on any work going locally, but they can be a good source of employment abroad in themselves.
Ski resorts, beach resorts, city centres, you’ll find Irish pubs everywhere providing live sports from home, cold beers and comfort food. Dropping in and asking is the best way to get the other side of the bar, especially if you have been there before and can pull a set of black and whites from your backpack.
Speaking English is a must but, while having an actual Irish barman or woman pulling the pints lends a certain authenticity to the theme, you don’t have to be Irish. Our local haunt from our days in Cusco claimed to be the highest Irish (owned) pub in the world and had Dutch, French, Scottish and American staff working alongside Peruvians. Speaking the local language is usually unnecessary.
Below is a small selection of Irish pubs we have seen or heard of recruiting foreigners:
Ma Nolans is a small chain of three Irish pubs in Nice and Cannes. No employment information is available site side but we’ve seen them advertising for bar and kitchen staff on other websites and via their own Facebook pages.
Another chain in France, O’Sullivans, has pubs in Paris and in the south. Here’s an application form for bartenders, wait staff, runners, kitchen staff and security personnel.
FrogPubs have a jobs page to recruit for management and team roles for their bars in Paris, Bordeaux and Toulouse. Here’s a map for more Irish pubs in Paris.
FitzPatrick’s, an Irish family run pub in the South of France, say they are always looking for good people. You'll have to be in Montpellier for more than three months and have some accommodation already sorted out for your stay.
The Dubliner, in Prague, sometimes uses its Facebook to hire experienced bar staff.
The Auld Dubliner is a new pub company in Switzerland. They currently have a pub in Basel and are opening another in Dietikon soon. They’ve posted ads recently to Jobs.ie for chefs, bar and floor staff with a minimum of one year’s experience within the last five years.
The Galway Bay Innsbruck doesn’t have a jobs page but may be open to hiring English speaking staff with at least one year of good bar and or waiting experience.
Scholars Lounge Irish Pubs can be found in Rome and Munich. The jobs page on the Rome website invites those with bar experience to join their friendly team, as Liam appears to have done.
The Spanish resorts have plenty of Irish bars in which to find work. Mallorca Jobs and Lanzarote Jobs are just two examples of useful Facebook groups where we often see smaller establishments advertising their vacancies, usually at quite short notice.
We took a peek at a staff photo on the website of Dubai’s Irish Village and, sure enough, there are enough pasty Irish complexions there to warrant a hunt for evidence of recruitment activity from abroad. Their dedicated recruitment Facebook page hasn’t been updated for a few years but a week or so ago they’d put out a message on Instagram for Irish service staff, aged over 21, with at least one year’s experience as a bartender, waiter/ess. Interviews are held in Dublin and Cork.
Found mostly in the USA, Fadó also has a bar in Abu Dhabi. They have a jobs page but weren’t hiring when we dropped by.
Founded by two childhood friends from Ireland that emigrated to the USA in the 1990’s Ri Ra has Irish pubs in four locations in the country. International applicants can apply for training opportunities via a J-1 visa. Send an email to careers@rira.com for more details.
It’s been a long time since we lived in Cusco, but Paddy’s is still there on the corner of the Plaza de Armas serving up Guinness, Cusqueña and, hopefully, twice daily happy hour Cuba Libres. We have no idea how they recruit these days but back in the day if you fit the bill and got your timing right, they’d take you on. If not, Molly's Irish Bar may be another one in town to try.

Work 3 Hours At A Paddywagon Hostel In Ireland And Stay For Free
Belfast was somewhere that we once attempted to save money on accommodation by trading some of our advertising space for a room, and we are glad we did. We didn’t know what to expect when we pitched up late to Paddy’s Palace, just in time before Emma left for the night, but it wasn’t the lovely two room apartment they had waiting for us.
While we relaxed on the comfortable sofas and made coffee in a kitchen better kitted out than our own, we reflected that Emma’s accent gave away that she wasn’t local to Ireland. In fact, she was from very far away.
| Father Ted tries to explain Australians and New Zealanders to Father Dougal: They are not small, they are from far away. |
We asked Emma the terms of her role and she confirmed she was working for her stay. There is no longer any information on the Paddywagon website on this but an old advertisement we found placed by the Derry hostel suggests they provide free accommodation and breakfast and free bus tours of Ireland, along with hostel work experience in return, for three or four hours help per day.
If you are interested in working for your keep in Ireland I wouldn’t bother emailing or writing in to apply. This sort of thing is best arranged after you have stayed in one of their hostels for a few days and got your face known about the place. If they have work that needs doing there might be a you-shaped space available; but if not, there won’t.
If you do want to make arrangements in advance, Paddy’s uses the HelpStay network to recruit volunteers: https://helpstay.com/stays/Backpacker-Hostel-Belfast-Northern-Ireland
Along with Belfast and Londonderry, Paddywagon has hostels in Dublin, Cork, Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney.
Websites For Finding A Teaching Job In Japan
There’s more to working in Japan than just teaching English though, to be honest, not that much more if you don’t speak Japanese.
When we first encountered Gaijinpot well over a decade ago it was an interesting free newsletter with perhaps half a dozen vacancies across Japan advertised in each issue. My, how they’ve grown. Since its founding by skint foreigners unable to find much in the way of information for working in Japan, Gaijinpot has been bought up by the Fuji Media group and become part of the English language media establishment in Japan. 300,000 people monthly use the site for information on living in Japan, to find jobs or arrange a place to live. Find out more at https://jobs.gaijinpot.com.
Finally sporting a semi coherent website, The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is Japan’s official programme for hiring English language classroom assistants, and a great way for foreigners to find work in the country. Most of the thousand participants who take part in the scheme each year end up in a classroom in one of Japan’s public schools, but work assisting local government offices in international exchange activities is possible for those with functional Japanese. A handful of sports professionals are also taken on. Applications for 2023 will open in September 2022. Find out more by plodding through http://jetprogramme.org/en/ or visit the, better, US, Canadian, UK or other official regional websites.
We like the simple newsletter format of O-Hayo Sensei, a twice monthly publication. O-Hayo Sensei has been serving its English teaching readership in this way for decades. To get a free copy of the latest issue containing 80+ vacancies, all you need to do is email ‘get issue’ to their email address and the latest copy will appear in the your inbox within hours. Alternatively, just pick up the current edition on the website. Currently, the site is still suffering from a Covid hangover with jobs available only to those already in Japan but if you are in country already, this is a great source for teaching jobs. Find out more at www.ohayosensei.com.
Writing for our website a few years ago, Shaun, a British expat working as an Assistant Language Teacher in Japan, also suggests Career Engine, Jobs in Japan, Japan English Teacher and even Craigslist to those of you looking for teaching jobs.

Gentleman Dance Hosts Wanted For Cruise Ship Jobs
Working a passage by sea is now largely confined to crewing on privately owned yachts. The days of going down to the docks and offering to make yourself useful during a voyage are now long gone but nimble on their toes gentlemen aged 40 plus can earn near free travel at sea by dancing and socialising with single women on board cruise ships.
Gentleman dance hosts (sometimes called cruise hosts) are called on to keep single female customers entertained on the dance floor, chat and mix with guests and sometimes provide accompaniment on shore excursions. Single women outnumber men on cruise ships so dance hosts help to make up the numbers. Cruise lines offering gentleman host programmes include Fred Olsen, Saga, Crystal Cruises, Regent Seven Seas and Holland America.
Perks for dance hosts include almost free travel – there is usually a small fee payable to an agency so the cruise is not quite free – tips, discounts, a drinks allowance and dining room privileges, and sometimes shore excursions and round trip airfares.
Dance hosts should be sociable, physically fit single men, aged 40 to 70, with impeccable manners and grooming and, of course, with good dance skills in dances such as the waltz, rumba and quickstep.
Eric Foster who came out of early retirement describes the role of a ‘Ghost’ as “much harder work than I ever experienced as a younger man! I never thought I had such stamina as is needed now. Dance Hosts have nearly every dance from about 7 30pm to after midnight every night.”
Speaking to the Telegraph, Jim Wood, an ex US Air Force pilot, told how he had visited 140 countries in the 20 years since his first assignment. He said he frequently finds that the women sitting on their own are recently widowed. “I’ll ask a lady to dance and discover it’s the first time she has taken to the floor since the death of her husband. You have to be gentle and empathetic in that situation.”
Jim Wood’s background isn’t unusual. Dance hosts needn’t be professional dancers. Most of their hosts are retired or semi-retired with backgrounds in business, law, finance, travel, medicine, education and the military.
Further information is available from Dance Afloat.
Write Letters For Juliet
Juliet needs a secretary. She gets thousands of letters from around the world in many languages but cannot handle them on her own because she killed herself after her husband, Romero, committed suicide after mistakenly thinking she had.
Sound familiar? That’s because she’s that Juliet, made famous the world over by Gnomeo & Juliet Shakespeare.
The phenomenon of writing to Shakespeare's most famous romantic heroine has been the subject of a book and a 2010 film, Letters to Juliet.
In the 1930s, letters began arrived addressed to “Juliet, Verona” though the tradition may have begun centuries earlier when people left letters on a sarcophagus thought to be hers. The flow of letters increased and since 1972 the Club di Giulietta (Juliet Club) has handled her post and secretaries of Juliet send replies.
As volunteer gigs go this one is short, usually only for a day, but longer is possible. One secretary, Emily Rose, considered writing letters for Juliet a highlight of her time in Verona.
To find out more and become a secretary of Juliet yourself, visit www.julietclub.com/en/segretaria-di-giulietta.

Blogs And Websites By House Sitters
Sipping a mojito on a tropical veranda with a rent-a-cat trying to snuggle up onto the keyboard of their laptops, these travellers are in the know about what It takes to write a kickass profile, enjoy rent free accommodation and leave both Fido and the ficus plants alive and well when they move on to their next house sitting gig.
Chris and Suze - When Suze applied for a customer service role at Brighton-based house and pet sitting company, Trusted Housesitters, a year’s free membership came as part of the application process. Though her application was unsuccessful they used their membership to good effect to do what they love most – take care of animals and spend their time together. They have their own pet sitting business and are booked up for the whole of 2022.
Sam and Veren - Leaving New York in 2016 after realising that it will be cheaper to travel than live in one of the most expensive cities in the world, Sam and Veren have house sat all over the US and Europe. Another sit saw them in an off grid, solar powered house in the Caribbean taking care of 17 animals. They’ve a book on their experiences and strategies and a podcast.
Amy and Andrew - Quitting their jobs in 2013, Amy and Andrew booked one way flights to New Zealand, leaving London to travel the world indefinitely. Whenever they return to the UK, they can afford to stay in the capital through house sitting, caring for pigs as well as cats and dogs. They credit their experience volunteering with animal shelters as part of the reason for landing house sitting gigs around the world.
Talon Windwalker - Is a former hospice chaplain who along with daughter Tigger has lived on someone else’s dime in the UK, on a Moroccan oasis, and in Thailand. Talon’s two part guide and tips are invaluable resources for finding your own place in the sun… or Yorkshire.
Charlie and Luke - Charlie Marchant and partner Luke have never used a house sitting website to find sits in Central America, preferring instead to use expat groups and forums, word of mouth and their own dedicated house sitting website. In their first year of house sitting they looked after homes in Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, including one with 11 dogs.
Laura and Tanbay - An Anglo-German couple, Laura and Tanbay use house sitting to travel both luxuriously and cheaply. Their first house sits were in Australia, where they saved a fortune on accommodation during their nine months in the country, and have since looked after properties in a number of countries including the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland, Greece and Portugal. They have put together a guide for first time house sitters in Australia and have appeared in the Daily Mail and on TV.
Charli and Ben - When we saw their tweet that they had been living rent free in the Caribbean for the last ten months and had three more house sitting assignments booked we decided to investigate Charli and Ben’s site, where found numerous great posts, including reasons to house sit at Christmas and creating a successful house sitting application. Though they say they no longer crave an apartment in the city since they left the UK in 2010, they do enjoy stepping into the shoes of foreign home owners to try out life in their corner of the world.
Nick and Dariece - House sitting plays an important role in keeping these goats on the road. Within a month of putting up their house sitting profile, they landed a seven month sit in Grenada, saving thousands of dollars in accommodation costs and using the time to build their website and form partnerships with tourism boards in Greece, Argentina, Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan.
Dalene and Pete - A Canadian couple, Dalene and Pete climbed the corporate ladder until, in 2009, they sold everything and bought a ticket to South America. They become strong advocates for house sitting through their blog Hecktic Travels and put together an ebook, How to Become a House Sitter And See the World. Leukaemia changed the focus of their blog more towards personal health issues, and they since have a more settled lifestyle, but many a house sitter cite this couple as an inspiration to give house sitting a go.
If these sites have convinced you to give house sitting a go, take a look at TrustedHousesitters, one of the most popular sites for finding house and pet sits.
Workaway Hosts Offering Work, Accommodation And Other Help To Ukrainian Refugees
Ukrainian members of the Workaway help exchange platform can apply to any project listed on the site but the following hosts have specifically mentioned they welcome Ukrainians displaced by the war in their homeland.
Nico, the owner of a resort with a ten horse farm, plus other farm animals, in Sicily had several paid open positions, including for an equestrian guide, and a horse groomer, when we checked his listing last week. The pool with a view of the sea and the mountains is a highlight here.
Elsewhere in Italy, Francesca lives on the edge of a small town called Atina, near Lazio, where her family have lived for 300 years. She extends a welcome to refugees to help renovate an old mansion. Or head to Emilia Romagna to help on a farm with a vision of efficient self sustainability.
George offers payment along with accommodation, giving priority to Ukrainian workawayers lending a hand on his campground - his life dream project - set in a meadow in a valley at the border of two mountain ranges in the northern Carpathians, Romania. A small organic farm in Urluia is also giving priority to Ukrainians, and there’s a warm welcome awaiting over the Serbian border, in Opovo.
Janika and Risto, who, with their young son, have a little farm in Peipohja, Finland provide advice in their profile that the Finnish government pays welfare to Ukrainians and say if you are fleeing the war you are welcome to stay with them for the transition period to get registering done and moving to a government provided apartment.
There’s another no work required invite to France extended by an artist and writer living in the foothills of the French Pyrenees, and another by a French English couple living in Normandy.
In Provins, a UNESCO World Heritge site, is an offer to someone who loves to cook, even if it's very simple. If you are a musician it is even better. Or try the Dutch and German couple running a château in Montjoi that is rented out to tourists in the summer season.
Ukrainian refugees in need will be welcomed by Gitte and Robbert to rural Andalucía, Spain. They are trying to turn their Finca into a self sustainable place to live. On a horse farm 200 kilometres west of Madrid, Pablo and Andrea want someone to become a member of their family, helping with the kids and horses.
Refugees from war are welcome, including Ukrainians, and invited to join a family in their farmhouse in the South of Harz Highlands. You could get an introduction to computer hacking, folk guitar playing or advanced ornithology here. The owners of another farm in Leisnig and an old farmhouse in a little village south of Berlin are two other places to try in Germany.
Lizzie and Duncan wish to offer an opportunity to progress with your studies, self care, animal care, cultural enlightenment and fun at their home with horses and animals near York, UK. On the south west coast of Ireland, Geraldine would love help in her large garden by the sea and is very happy to help anyone from Ukraine who needs a place to stay.
Buffalo Bob has put out the welcome mat to his sprawling 240 acre ranch on Southern Vancouver Island, Canada, where volunteers can learn about bison ranching and eagles. Ukrainians are also welcome on a farm in Alberta.
Or you can immerse yourself in blue grass life on a farm in Kentucky, USA. One or two Ukrainian refugees can be housed in Berne, upstate New York.
A non profit wild horse training facility in New Mexico says that they accept war refugees for extended stays in exchange for gardening and maintenance, helping with learning English and becoming established in an English speaking country. Over the border, a Mexican family in Cuernavaca, south of the capital, love to have foreign people in their home and Ukrainians are welcome anytime.
In Japan, Keisuke says he can significantly relax his usual acceptance requirements for Ukrainians to stay on his farm.
We also recommend checking the Facebook of Phoenix Association, an NGO founded by a group of enterprising young people from Cherkassy, Ukraine. Funded by the European Solidarity Corps program, most, but not all, projects are in Turkey.
Help Exchange Volunteer Projects For Surfers
Surfers are generally a relaxed, friendly bunch, so when they put down roots and find themselves in a position to open a hostel, other business or social enterprise, they tend to welcome kindred spirits to help them out around the place. While the itinerant surfer helpers they once were get a free bed, usually food, and perhaps use of a board too, the hostel owners benefit from having someone keeping an eye on things while they hit the waves themselves.
Help out in a surf hostel in Lobitos, Peru - Most of the volunteers opting to help out at this hostel with two attached non profit cultural projects decide to stay longer than planned. Located by the ocean in a one hundred year old building, and described as a perfect place to learn to surf, to chill, to fish, travellers help on reception or with cleaning for a maximum of five hours a day, in exchange for accommodation in a shared room. Nearby, another surf hostel has been transformed from a former military base into an ocean front sanctuary for nature lovers, surfers and explorers alike.
Become the best supervisor/cook in kids surf-camp in Fuerteventura, Spain - While her husband stays behind in Ukraine to fight, Natalia took her five year old son to safety in the Canary Islands, where she is now creating a safe place for as many other Ukrainian children as she can. Duties mostly involve activities with the kids or cleaning.
Backpacker surf hostel in Ahangama, Sri Lanka - One hundred metres from a prime surf spot, this surf hostel looks for individuals with energy and charisma to organise events, pub crawls, and scooty trips. They also want fitness trainers, yoga instructors.
Surf hostel looking for Instagrammer and social media creative near Agadir, Morocco - Surf classes yoga lessons and lunch at the beach are among the perks offered to the person chosen by this Moroccan surf hostel to manage social media, take photos and make videos for Instagram. They also need someone for general chores. There’s another option nearby, while Instagrammers and yoga instructors can also volunteer further south, in Taghazout.
Volunteer for our surf outreach centre in Chiapas, Mexico - A not for profit hotel and surf school with a sister home and a sister community project that strives to change the lives of the disadvantaged children and young people in their care are looking for experienced surfers and swimmers. They also need general helpers around the hotel to care of guests, with maintenance, housekeeping and admin. Try these two if you would prefer to surf in Troncones or Sayulita.
Be part of our little community located on the beach in the lively town of Montanita, Ecuador - A small hostel, located on the beach in the lively town of Montanita, wants someone to look after their three dogs. The position is paid and described as perfect for someone taking courses or working online and able to stay two months. Accommodation with breakfast, free surfboard use, and a discount on yoga classes are added perks, and you can take your own pet too.
Help with a project to teach English and Surf on Nias Island, Indonesia - This is a community initiative managed solely through a team of passionate volunteers for Hiliamaetaniha village, a friendly community of approximately 1,800 people near Lagundri bay in the south of Nias Island. Volunteers will have the opportunity to live in a traditional house in a traditional village, a truly authentic cultural experience few foreigners have access to. Volunteers teach English to the local children three days a week.
Volunteer at a Surf Paradise, Living for Free (Panama) - Help with tasks for five hours a day, six days of the week, including in the kitchen and bar of this surf camp, to earn your bed and board. Other duties include some light maintenance., greeting and entertaining guests and just creating a nice vibe about the place. There’s a car for people with a driver’s license and insurance.
Get to know the local surf culture near Tayrona Park, Colombia - Volunteers will learn Spanish with proper slang on joining this surf camp once their rebuild is finished in September. They need a very active and social person to be responsible for their social media, WordPress management, and work on reception. Some carpenters will also be amazing.
Come to our hostel and have the best experiences in La Serena, Chile - Share great conversation, surfing, mountain biking, trekking, rock climbing, kayaking, playing guitar and learn how to run and keep a hostel full of life. They need somebody that is willing to stay three weeks and have fun. Worldwide travellers going through South America may also like to drop into a centrally located hostel in Pichilemu to mingle with guests and create a great warm vibe whilst doing your duties. These include reception, room cleaning and general maintenance.
Help us at a Surfhouse & Yoga Retreat! Come and enjoy sun and beautiful waves in Portugal - Join four Italians passionate about Portugal, surfing, good food and yoga if you are looking for a sunny place to stay and work, only a few minutes from beautiful beaches and waves. Elsewhere in Portugal, paid positions may be had with a surf camp near Vale Figueiras Aljezur, in the Algarve, the Azores, at a guest house near Consolacao beach, for a surf and yoga camp photographer in Praia Grande, and with a surf themed cafe and hostel in the old town of Lagos - though some of these may have gone by the time this piece is published. Try them next year if so.
If you prefer to bypass the work exchange platforms, Another Surf Camp and Gota Dagua both have information for volunteers on their websites.
Help out at our surf camp in Gerroa, NSW, Australia - Eat, sleep, surf, repeat. We couldn’t do a post on surfing without including a listing in Australia. This one is paid and many of their current surf instructors and managers all started as workawayers. The work is as a general hand, cooking a BBQ or preparing meals.
Bootfitting Job Vacancies
In the last issue of The Working Traveller, we ran through positions in ski resorts, where the classic role is that of chalet host. Other ski resort positions include hotel cooks and chefs, resort reps, ski reps and instructors, managers, bar staff, hotel waiting staff, maintenance people, housekeepers, kitchen porters, night porters, general assistants, childcarers, nightwatchman, laundry staff and accountants.
One job that we neglected to mention is the boot fitter. Working out of ski equipment stores, the boot fitter is interested in shoes, insoles and their fit. A good ski boot fit helps skiers control the skis, stops the foot sliding back and forth in the boot, and prevents painful blisters.
Winter World Connect is a website that devotes itself to this niche. The site also provides information on training for a career in ski boot fitting, a list of boot fitting stores around the world, covering Alpine countries, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and, most importantly for us, boot fitting job vacancies - though they only had a couple of these when we looked.
Work With Horses Through These Voluntary Help Exchanges
There are plenty of places around the world for horse riders to get a quick equine fix but only by volunteering can travellers hope to spend any length of time directly with horses. Most work exchange hosts will prefer volunteers to stay at least a month, but longer stays are often required. Horse riding experience to a competent level is usually necessary but people with other skills, gardening or cooking for instance, may also be able to make themselves useful. In return for your hard work, meals and accommodation will be provided along with the pleasure of working daily with your favourite animal.
Volunteer caring for Horses at our Sanctuary in Skyros, Greece - This animal welfare, conservation and education project in Greece has had over 200 volunteers since 2009. Most of the work is centred around a herd of very friendly skyrian ponies, mucking out fields, feeding, watering, grooming, keeping the yard and tack room clean, handling the ponies and helping with the upkeep of fences and stables.
Learn Polo in Argentina - Help out with the horses and tourist guests and you can sleep and eat for free in Argentina. An additional bonus is professional instruction in polo. A competent horse rider is preferred but if you cook and have good Spanish then there could be a place for you too. A three to 12 month minimum stay is required.
To the west, in Mendoza, Covid cut short French Polish couple Mo and Angie’s ambitious plans to travel from Argentina to Mexico on horseback over the course of ten years. Instead, they bought land where they have been busy building a treehouse cabin, Mongolian yurt, swimming pool and converting a bus with Japanese style pods for volunteers helping with their project. Horse riding is just one of the many activities offered during downtime, with lessons available to beginners.
Living at a farmstay, gardening/farming, DIY projects, horses and farm animal upkeep, Pune, India - Before the colonial period, India’s equestrian history was very diverse and this host wants to revive the old connections with their horses. People who would love to experience Indian farm life are welcome - and welcomed by two geese on entering the farm - to get involved with various tasks including helping with horses.
Come join our family and help us with horse handling in Sao Teotonio, Portugal - Here you will be part of a family who loves to share their knowledge about processing medical mushrooms and freedom based horse work. For this summer they are looking for people with riding experience who love to be around horses and are also able to provide some help in simple tasks like fencing, woodwork, or gardening. Further north, there may be a paid opportunity with an equestrian livery and training stables in Obidos.
Support our animal welfare organisation for horses in Valencia, Spain - There’s no riding at this sanctuary where horses and other abused and abandoned animals have a second chance to live happily and know respect and love. Right now they need help with the daily care of the horses, and the maintenance and expansion of their facilities. Another opportunity to volunteer with rescue horses, dogs and cats can be found in Andalucia.
Come and enjoy daily horse riding on the beach in Leinster, Ireland - There are some household chores and dog/cat sitting to be done here but most of the time volunteers, who should be experienced riders, will be working directly with horses. Alternatively, near Carrickmacross, Ronald could use a hand looking after retired racehorses, or help out on a quaint rescue farm and learn how to build trust with animals in Kildare.
Come and work with us at our busy Horse Ranch near Vancouver, Canada - Cowgirls - they can’t host cowboys - can learn a lot as they help with all aspects of work at this busy ranch. This includes barn chores, brushing horses, tacking horses up, helping with meal prep and keeping the ranch clean. They also run a kid’s summer camp programme and need some help with that too. Accommodation, plenty to eat and payment are offered in return. Near Ontario, Lin’s 101 year old mother is looking forward to meeting animal lovers looking to ride or play with horses in peaceful Marmora, or consider volunteering on a non commercial, non profit, lakeside ranch in British Columbia.
If you are experienced with horses come and help out in New South Wales, Australia - You must be a capable horse rider, able to saddle and ride on your own at this haflinger stud. The family drive carriages for sport and are happy to teach you about carriage driving.
Looking for people with natural horsemanship skills to play with our horses and dogs in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica - Staying in a Caribbean cabin and playing with horses are the perks here. A minimum stay of two months is required and volunteers should be experienced in natural horsemanship. Across the country, on the Pacific coast, Elsa offers horseback riding tours in and around Playa Junquilla and requires volunteer help about the place. Horse riding experience is a must.
Animal refugee, fruit garden and farm on the beautiful island of Isabela, Galapagos, Ecuador - Looking after horses is just one of the roles assigned by this host and, to be honest, we don’t know how much of your day this will involve but you will be doing it in the Galapagos Islands, one of the most unique biodiversity hotspots on the planet. Accommodation is in a large tent, with a great mattress, plus all the fruit you can eat. On the mainland, a horse ranch situated inside one of the world's only inhabited volcanic craters welcomes anyone with experience in construction, horse care/training, photography/videography, social media/marketing, or even just an interest in getting your hands dirty with ranch duties.
