FRANCE > Applications for the 2026/27 winter season are already open at Ski Beat. Their recruitment began in March in various resorts in the French Alps with enticements to seasonaires to come back again next year. In previous seasons, we’ve said that Ski Beat’s excellent dedicated jobs website is perhaps a reflection of the business being founded by people who came out to France to “do a season” and then never went back.

⭐️Free Long Term Permaculture Volunteering
BRAZIL > Eco Caminhos have a number of pay to volunteer options - which we are not interested in here - but credit to them for keeping their long term volunteering programme free, though you probably will need to speak Portuguese. Their farm, located in the heart of the Atlantic Forest, one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots, and home to 15 percent of all known species on Earth, invites people with experience in key areas like natural building, agroforestry, gardening, carpentry, communication, administration, or marketing, to stay a while in basic accommodation and work full time.

⭐️Community Living And Learning
ECUADOR > Rhiannon Commune in Malchinguí opens its doors to people from all over the world who want to experience a different way of living, connect with nature, and contribute to a project focused on permaculture, land regeneration, and community life. The minimum stay volunteering here is two weeks, working five hours a day in their 35 bed garden, on bio-construction projects, cultivating edible Ostra mushrooms, beekeeping, taking care of animals and making compost.
They ask for a financial contribution from those who are able to help cover part of the food costs, though it is flexible, varying from $40 to $150, and only if it is within your means. Two former volunteers, Antonio from El Salvador, and Maria Giselaand from California, wrote about their experience here in 2015.
⭐️Bug Lovers Can Give Butterfly Garden Tours
COSTA RICA > You pay no fees to intern at the Monteverde Butterfly Gardens for ten weeks. And you don’t need experience or prior knowledge of insects, as they will train you to do English language tours through their gardens and insect collection.
In return for volunteering, they provide food and housing, and will also gain two months of experience in environmental education and outreach, knowledge of neotropical insects and arachnids, plus amazing birding and wildlife viewing opportunities. They also take short term volunteers for four weeks, helping behind the scenes with vegetable gardening, watering, weeding, planting, maintenance, shovelling, and composting.
⭐️Help Turn Rubbish Into Schools
GUATEMALA > Long Way Home, in Paxan, Comalapa, is a non profit that uses sustainable design and materials to construct self sufficient schools that promote education, employment and environmental stewardship. LWH seeks many talents from fixing engines or laying concrete to playing games and horsing around, for periods of two weeks to three months. US$85 a week covers the cost of accommodation in the volunteer house. Typically, food costs and preparation duties are shared by everyone in the house.
⭐️Three Volunteering Possibilities On Lake Atitlán
GUATEMALA > A few years ago, Gabby Boucher (who we’ve mentioned several times in JAB) lived in Panajachel on Lake Atitlan for one month for free by helping GuateSUP with their paddleboarding business. She found the gig through Workaway, but this is their Instagram.
Whether they field volunteer enquiries this way, we don’t know, but their friends at Dreamboat Hostel frequently make their volunteer needs known through their social media. This Workaway listing seeking electronic music geeks and enthusiasts to work as club promoters and social butterflies belongs to Macá Hotel.
⭐️Election Observers And Other Ways To Show Solidarity In El Salvador
EL SALVADOR > Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad (CIS) is a multi-faceted organisation, with many programmes supporting education, organising, and social justice. During elections, CIS seeks volunteer election observers, but generally is looking for English teachers to help with the English classes that they offer to local activists. More recently, they’ve sought help with marketing for their language school and for fair trade crafts. Volunteers usually must make a commitment of at least ten weeks. Volunteers must pay their personal expenses, plus a one off US$100 fee to CIS to cover their orientation costs. Housing with local families is US$90 per week.
⭐️Interested In A Ski Season?
EUROPE > At Skiworld, you can register your interest for working a ski season in 2026/27 in anticipation of when their vacancies open up. This is usually around the start of May for jobs in Alpe d’Huez, Courchevel, La Plagne, Les Arcs, Les Deux Alpes, Meribel, Meribel Mottaret, St Anton, Tignes, Val d’Isere and Val Thorens. Both Ski Famille and Skiworld are also accepting registrations of interest for next winter in the Alps.

⭐️Live With Monkeys In The Sleeping Forest
PERU > Esperanza Verde is a conservation project tucked away in the Amazon basin in Peru. They’ve been there since 2010, rescuing wildlife and protecting the 180 hectares of rainforest they now own, called ‘Selva Dormida’ (sleeping forest).
Their volunteers help with ongoing construction, building enclosures and with the quarantine and veterinary clinic. In addition, you can help with mapping the area and participating in their reforestation project by replanting, among other things, fruit trees originating from the area.
Caretaking of the animals is one of the most important daily tasks, making sure that they are all kept fed and the enclosures clean and healthy. An intermediate knowledge of Spanish is handy, but it is not a requirement. Minimum stay is six weeks. Accommodation and food are provided for around £100 per week. Staff and volunteers coexist with about 30 monkeys who are free to roam around the centre.
⭐️Offbeat Himalayas
INDIA > Fika Homes, a slow, offbeat hostel-meets-boutique stay nestled in Gadagusain, a quiet mountain village in Himachal Pradesh is opening its doors for the summer season this April. They want a visual storyteller to tell their story.
⭐️Social Media & Volunteer Marketing Support Needed
ZIMBABWE > Rescue Dogs for Wildlife, a conservation and rescue project based near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is looking for someone with experience in social media marketing and volunteer recruitment to help promote its international volunteer programme.
They give dogs facing abandonment or euthanasia a second chance by training them for meaningful work in conservation and public safety, training them to track poachers, detect medical conditions, or locate missing persons. On their website, they give details on volunteering with them, helping their rescue dogs. However long you want to stay, they are happy to accommodate.
⭐️Orchards Cookery Is Recruiting Cookery Tutors
UK > Join the Orchards team for work from May/June to November/December 2026 with potentially ongoing roles. Ideally, applicants will have done multiple ski seasons or have at least one season, but with significant other cooking/chef experience, have great people skills and enjoy the company of young, energetic people and working as part of a team.
⭐️Sea Turtle Nest Protection
NICARAGUA > Join this organisation working on Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast with a focus on conservation and volunteer tourism. They run a sea turtle hatchery from July until January, taking on project assistants and volunteers. There is a fee, but MEMANTA says it works out to about the same per day as paying for a dorm room, meals and activities when backpacking.
SOS Nicaragua can arrange something similar. Last month, they put out an open call for volunteers, who contribute towards their keep, and research assistants - long term roles with living costs covered - to take part in fieldwork protecting endangered sea turtles on Los Brasiles Island.
⭐️Sea Turtle Beach Project Coordinators
COSTA RICA > Field coordinators working for The Threatened Marine Species Rescue Center (CREMA by its Spanish acronym), along several beaches on the southern Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, have their meals and accommodations covered, receive a monthly stipend of US$300 to cover personal expenses, and some money towards flight costs. Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English and Spanish.
They also need research assistants, but they must contribute a weekly programme fee of either US$120 or $180 to cover accommodation and three basic meals per day for the duration of their ten week internship.
Latin American Sea Turtles also has a research assistant programme. Depending on the previous experience and the skills of applicants, it will be decided whether the costs of lodging and food will be covered by LAST or if the assistant will be asked to pay US$5 or $10 per night.
⭐️Mustique Conservation Internship Programme
ST VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES > Be quick applying to this 11 week conservation internship for individuals who are passionate about marine and terrestrial conservation and eager to gain practical field experience in a unique island environment. The application deadline is April 3, and comes with a US$600 contribution towards food costs. Applicants must have Open Water SCUBA certification with a minimum of 25 logged dives.
⭐️Sloth Ironman Games
COSTA RICA > As the name suggests, Toucan Rescue Ranch devotes much of its attention to colourful, big beaked birds, but when we go to Costa Rica, we will be timing our arrival there with their annual Sloth Ironman Games. Held each year in October, the event is billed as the most sloooowly exciting event of the year.
The annual event helps to raise money for their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and release Costa Rican wildlife, for which they take on volunteers and offer internships. They have tried to keep their internships free and their volunteering fees reasonable, but have had to give in to reality, charging US$30 a day to interns to cover room and board costs as well as the education you will receive. Volunteers pay for their accommodation and also must donate a $200 flat fee, which is refundable for all international volunteers who commit 12 weeks or longer. For local volunteers and interns, the fee is waived.
Toucan Rescue Ranch
⭐️Slow Volunteering
COSTA RICA > Try The Sloth Conservation Foundation to volunteer with sloths. Volunteer opportunities here depend on their current needs. While they are unable to provide accommodation, transport, or meals for volunteers in Costa Rica, they do not charge a volunteer fee.
You will be hot, sweaty, wet, cold, eaten by mosquitoes, sleepy, sore, and tired, so volunteers must be extremely dedicated to sloth conservation on the Sloth Institute’s six month internship. On the yay side, they go on to say you’ll still feel that there is no other place in the world that you would rather be than watching sloths in the jungle. We don’t know if there is a fee or not here, or if they require any other type of contribution. Same with the Jaguar Rescue Center, which also has sloths and accepts help from volunteers.
⭐️Refuge In The Amazon
ECUADOR > Merazonia is a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre located on 250 acres of Amazon rainforest, near Mera. Volunteers from all over the world who are willing to get a bit of jungle dirt under their nails help in the day to day care of over 100 animals. Starting as a volunteer and ending up as a coordinator, Camille Lasbleiz shares a typical day volunteering at Merazonia.
Merazonia does not receive any government funding, and for the well being of the animals do not receive tourists in the centre either. Depending on volunteer fees to cover the basic costs of running the centre, they ask for US$115 to $160 per week, depending on length of stay, to cover lodging and food, and a contribution to medical supplies and animal food.
⭐️Join The Macaw Society Volunteer Team In The Rainforest Of Tambopata
PERU & COSTA RICA > The Macaw Society accept volunteers throughout the year to help them with their observations in the lowlands of southeastern Peru. Although most volunteers come from a biological or environmental sciences background, there are no qualification limitations, and they can find a role for almost any type of volunteer. You do need to pay for food and accommodation, but volunteering here is otherwise free.
Two more places to volunteer with macaws can be found in Costa Rica. The Macaw Recovery Network offers varied volunteer work in two locations. The work can involve caring for a group of macaws, giving tours to visitors, creating environmental education materials for children, or garden and infrastructure maintenance. Once on site, accommodation, daily transport, and utilities are provided at no cost, but all team members buy and prepare their own food.
They can also offer internships to young professionals, offering a comprehensive six month experience that combines hands on work, learning modules, and direct contributions to MRN’s core programmes: birds, habitat, and people.
When volunteering with Ara Manzanillo to help with their efforts to reintroduce the critically endangered Great Green Macaws to the Sur Caribbean in Manzanillo, in Limon Province, the accommodation is described as basic, though we like the sound of hammocks, a balcony overlooking the rainforest, and the open air porch. Volunteers are provided with basic bulk foods (rice, beans, coffee, eggs) and a bike for foraging and personal use. There is a US$300 per month donation for lodging and administrative costs, reduced if staying for three months or more.
⭐️Surf Camp International
WORLDWIDE > We were introduced to Surf Camp International recently when they posted to our Facebook group. They are an ocean and surf lifestyle recruitment agency specialising in finding you the most exciting ocean and surf lifestyle jobs and volunteer positions around the world.
⭐️Donkey Work
GREECE > Corfu Donkey Rescue, situated near Doukades, is looking for paid general workers. This is an all year round position starting as soon as possible. No previous experience with donkeys is required; full training will be provided. However, you must be crazy about animals, physically fit and able to speak a good level of English.
⭐️Volunteer As A Line Handler For Boats Crossing The Panama Canal
PANAMA > This is a thing. It costs a fair bit for a yacht to pass through the Panama Canal, but a yacht owner can save some money on the 12 hour or so transit by taking on volunteers as line handlers - it’s a requirement to have four onboard - instead of the more experienced Panamanians who charge over US$100 each.
Brian Hathaway, who hopped aboard a buddy’s catamaran specifically to ride through the Canal, says volunteers “don’t need to be athletes or bodybuilders, but they do need to be able to stand for a couple of hours, bend up and down, squat, and pull a line tight when needed. They should be physically fit enough, not superhuman, just capable.” In return, volunteers get an experience, fed and an Uber back the way they came.
Though you don’t need sailing experience or training for the crossing - the boats will be motoring through the canal - FarAwaySailor, who has done it as both a skipper and crew, does say he would always choose someone with experience over someone who has no idea what they’re doing because, while most of the whole process is pretty benign, it can quickly go wrong if people make mistakes or don’t understand instructions.
Sharing his tips in a Reddit thread, he says almost every single boat crossing from the Atlantic to the Pacific starts its journey from Shelter Bay Marina. Wannabe line handlers can advertise their free services as a line handler on the noticeboard at the marina. Or you might just be in the right place at the right time. One skipper picked up three Polish guys who had been camping in the woods outside the marina.
Going the other way, Stephen Knight, writing on his own Volunteer Latin America website, says to ask around the boats and use the notice board at the Balboa Yacht Club. His article was initially written a few years old so discard his advice about the Pedro Miguel Boat Club. That has since been forcibly closed down by the Panama Canal Authority.
⭐️Outdoor Education Positions Available In Vietnam
VIETNAM > Outgoing active tour guides and activity instructors are sought to work on multi-day school trips all over Vietnam from September to December. Both Vietnamese and international applicants are welcome to apply.
⭐️Sons Of Wind
KENYA > Sons of Wind Kiteschool is hiring kitesurfing instructors. ️️This is a rare opportunity to work in a stunning coastal paradise, meet riders and travellers from all over the world, and experience the warmth of Kenyan culture in one of East Africa’s most iconic beach destinations.
⭐️Vervet Monkey Foundation Volunteer Coordinator
SOUTH AFRICA > A volunteer coordinator able to stay for a minimum of one year may still be needed at the Vervet Monkey Foundation. Vegan meals and individual cabin accommodation are provided, plus a small monthly living allowance. General volunteers are also needed all year round.
⭐️Isla Animals Rescue Retreat
MEXICO > Isla Animals have bounced back after getting evicted from the land they used for their shelter on Isla Mujeres. Now settled into a new spot on the mainland, near Cancun, they can get back to their work offering free spay and neuter services, and rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming puppies. There is no fixed fee to volunteer with this non profit (when we wrote this, anyway - this may change). Accommodation is provided, and a small contribution may be asked to cover costs such as electricity and water, which are among the information in their video presentation for volunteers.
Isla Animals
YouTuber and blogger Christine Ka’aola filmed the day she spent at SOS El Arca, another dog rescue shelter in the region. They particularly welcome volunteers with special skills like accounting, marketing, fundraising, etc, but anyone is welcome to drop by their Playa Del Carmen rescue centre to help care for their hundreds of dogs and cats.
⭐️Paintshop Pros
PORTUGAL > It’s that time of year again when Paintshop Hostel is looking for staff members to work at their surf hostel by the beach in Figueira da Foz.
⭐️Ensure Your Surf Spot In Brittany
FRANCE > The Spot Surfcamps - La Torche is recruiting volunteers to help ensure the smooth running of their camp located in Penmarch, Brittany, close to the ocean and surrounded by nature. They need people from early May to mid September for a minimum of two weeks.
⭐️Help An Animal Volcano Rescuer In The Canary Islands
SPAIN > Someone hardworking, kind, and who loves animals is needed to volunteer in the Canary Islands. Isabella Jones has posted this to many groups to find help for her mother, Alison, whom she describes as a quiet, secret hero. Alison lives in an off-grid mountain retreat and guesthouse with 17 cats, four dogs, a disabled rabbit, 11 chickens, and a turtle, some of which she rescued from a volcano.
⭐️Community Based Coastal & Education Initiative
INDONESIA > This flyer was posted to the Volunteer South East Asia Facebook group in February, but we’ve seen them more recently putting the word out elsewhere about their coastal community project in Gorontalo.
Telmo Daniel Rodrigues from Portugal summarises the project thus: “Clean the beach Indonesia Beach clean teach about no plástic, give sport gear to locals, children and learn to calm, to sing, and be part of the culture instead of changing it. Less pizza, more rice :)- thank you locals for the time I lived with you, your smile is amaizing.” Volunteers will get a discounted stay here with breakfast.
⭐️Farmer Tom And The York Maze Team
UK > We don’t think Telmo Daniel Rodrigues, see above, was trying to be punny, but Farmer Tom and the York Maze team (who go straight onto JAB’s crap band name shortlist) certainly are. They are on the lookout for amaizing and cornfident people who, on cornpleting their application form, will be cornsidered for their seasonal teams for summer and Halloween.
⭐️Help A Mapuche Artisan
CHILE > A welcome is extended to content creators, poets, artisans, yoga practitioners, and, above all, world travellers who want to get to know the countryside in southern Chile, and help Nicanor, a Mapuche artisan/textile artist. Decent Spanish is required.
⭐️Project Ixcanaan
GUATEMALA > Tucked away on a quiet shore of Lake Peten Itza, the village of El Remate is home to around 250 families, surrounded by the luscious rainforests of northern Guatemala and an absolutely breathtaking array of wildlife. Howler monkeys, toucans, capuchin and spider monkeys are just some of your potential neighbours.
Year by year, Project Ixcanaan develops in new ways, working with everyone in the local community, from young children and grandparents to the town mayor and business leaders. The clinic is a staple to the village, as is the dentist surgery, women’s centre and children’s development centre. They welcome self starting, enthusiastic volunteers of every age and background, to whom they provide accommodation for a negligible fee.
⭐️Work To Surf
SOUTH & CENTRAL AMERICA > Volunteering at a surf camp in Central and South America offers a unique opportunity to trade your skills for accommodation while immersing yourself in world class surf culture, says the tame AI JAB enlists when stuck thinking up an introduction to a post.
Many surf camps and surf hostels in the region supplement their local paid staff with international volunteers who want to contribute to a community, whether through direct surf instruction or supporting the daily operations that keep a camp running. Instructing roles are usually paid, but many camps seek volunteers to help with hospitality, kitchen and bar tasks, maintenance, social media and photography.
Joining Workaway or one of the other work exchange platforms is the best way to find these gigs, but JAB won’t judge stingy backpackers looking to avoid paying their fees. You’re among friends here.
Although this is the harder way, this is exactly how Stella Ulm rolls. She searches “surf” in Workway, identifies candidates, stalks them on Hostelworld, and then gets in touch through Instagram. Most likely, this is how she ended up at Pop House, in Montanita, Ecuador. When volunteering there a couple of years ago, she said they also wanted surf instructors.
We’ve seen nearby My Little House Surf & Backpacker Hostel described as a good place to volunteer, too. In Las Tunas, try Hermanos Perdidos Surf. This is their Workaway profile.
Volunteers are referenced in the reviews of Free Spirit Hostel Ecuador. They are promised the loan of surf boards alongside accommodation, vegetarian meals, and yoga classes for sticking around for at least one month. Cooks, bar staff, yoga and surf instructors have all been sought out via their social media, but the tasks here could be almost anything to help out around the hostel, with the most important one being to help make the hostel a happy place. They can be found in a small fishing village called Puerto Engabao. They have a hostel in El Tránsito, Nicaragua, too.
The Canoa Waves Project is teaching over 300 local children to surf for free this season. They also provide English classes to surf instructors and do community projects like tree planting and art around town. Janna Maria Van Hoof is the point of contact for this.
Hostel Ohanalu Surf House is another place to contact via Instagram, ala Stella Ulm. Described as a surf museum, this is clearly their Worldpacker profile, something very much confirmed on their linktree.
Brazil’s Kite AliCori provides accommodation in Macapá beach to enthusiastic English speaking volunteers who are social and love to meet others in the kitesurfing community. They don’t have any information on their website, but this advert, posted to a Facebook group last September, describes what they want.
Along with hiring certified instructors who enjoy the adrenaline of constant wind, Kite Addict Colombia do nice things for the local community and kids in La Guajira, for which they take on volunteers. Nearby Kite Adventure is up for swapping surfboards and accommodation for yoga instruction. Content creators and general assistants are also sought here.
1,600 hours of work with the support of many volunteers have turned an abandoned shack in Pichilemu, Chile’s surf mecca, into Rusty’s Surfcamp. They are always looking for new volunteers to join them for free accommodation, breakfast, dinner, and surf equipment rental discounts. You’ll work four and a half hours a day, six days a week here.
While it isn’t provided free, the housing offered to volunteers donating their time for a few months to Otra Cosa Network is presented as an affordable option for accommodation in the surfers’ paradise of Huanchaco, Peru, especially in the summer months (December to March) when local hostels hike their prices.
Run by a British-Peruvian couple, OCN provides educational support to marginalised children. They don’t state how much it is on their website, but a former volunteer shared the cost as about £10 a night for a private room. They also make mention of a donation. They don’t say how much it is, but a link to pay your volunteer contribution will be provided on application. The homestay style Ola Surf House also takes on volunteers.
More kind hearted surfers can be found in a nearby small underdeveloped community called Cerrito de la Virgen. Surf Cerrito is a non profit aiming to use surfing to empower the boys and girls living there by making the sea a more accessible space for children from low income backgrounds. They look for enthusiastic and motivated people who are available for a minimum of six weeks, to help them make a real difference to people’s lives. You don’t need to be a surfer to apply; all they ask is that you have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to making a difference. Some basic knowledge of Spanish is desirable as you will be working closely with the local community.
Surf Cerrito
Another of our favourite surf related volunteering opportunities can be found in Mexico. Based out of San Diego, Surfers For Strays is an all volunteer non profit organisation that reduces the number of stray animals through spay and neuter programmes. If you are staying nearby, watch this video and see if you don’t want to help out as a day volunteer with daily tasks at their headquarters in Nuevo Troncones, at their shelter in Zihuatanejo, or on one of their Spay and Neuter Campaigns. They also have a live-in site position at their HQ, but this tends to be booked months in advance.
Experienced surfers with a passion for making a difference are also required in Villa Del Sol, Puerto Madero, by Misión Surf to assist with their surf and swim programmes.
Related is The Misión México Casa. They accept volunteers during the Christmas, Easter, and Summer school holidays to facilitate specialised workshops and courses with the children and youth in their care. They are looking for passionate people to join their Enrichment Volunteer Program and lead activities and workshops based on their skills and expertise. 25 hours per week is exchanged for one meal per day and shared accommodation in a four bedroom flat. Volunteers must be native English speakers, 21 years and older, and willing to commit for two weeks or more. More volunteer roles are listed here.
When the new owners secured the keys at the end of last year to The Salty Dogs Hostel in Surf City, El Salvador, they set about remodelling the place with the help of volunteers. As long as you aren’t a lazy bollox, going forward, the indications are that they will keep some around.
The lazy bollox could perhaps head for Sunset Surf Villa in La Libertad. There are lots of volunteers here, perhaps too many. Although some reviews are more positive, many guests here describe the volunteers as cliquey and unwelcoming, hogging the kitchen, and creating a strange vibe.
Those with lifeguard experience or ocean safety skills can provide their services during international surf tournaments held in El Salvador.
It’s been a while, but we have seen Nicaragua’s Kitesurf Ometepe looking for a volunteer to join their team and help out for a minimum one month period in their busy December to April season in exchange for free classes and equipment rental. Though they said they were working on it, at that time they couldn’t offer accommodation.
Dreamsea Surfcamp in Tamerindo provides details of their volunteer programme on their website. While they don’t ask for many hours from their volunteers, they do ask for between US$118 and $220 (not including taxes FFS), depending on the length of stay.
For combining surfing and volunteering in Panama, try El Ranchito Surf Camp. They cropped up numerous times while researching this post.

Further north, on Caye Caulker, new volunteers won’t get to meet Charlie XCX or Chunky Monkey. The two turtles were released back into the wild in February by Aces Wildlife Rescue. But volunteers can assist with other tasks at their facility, including the cleaning of rehabilitation enclosures, patient feeding, transportation for injured animals, rescues, education, and fundraising events. All of their volunteer positions require an application, interview, and training, and volunteers should be self funding as neither food nor accommodation is provided.
⭐️A New Beginning For Children And Young People
PERU > It was quite some time ago when a former project manager and volunteer coordinator got in touch with us to pass on word of Kiya Survivors, a UK based charity that operates projects in Cusco, in nearby Urubamba, and in the north of the country, to make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children, young people and their families.
They’ve been around for a while, and JAB has a vague memory of visiting them in 2002 while updating the file on local volunteer projects for the now defunct South American Explorers. More information can be found in their brochure, including on fees, the gist of which is it’s £55 per week for accommodation, but otherwise volunteers should be self funding.
The same person who got in touch with us way back when had also volunteered from time to time with Aldea Yanapay and said they would speak to Yuri, who runs the project. We didn’t hear back from Yuri, but he had volunteer projects in two schools, one in Cusco and one in the Sacred Valley. They still seem to be around, as of at least September, judging by their social media. There is no fee to help out here as they strongly disapprove of voluntourism.

⭐️You Say Marco, They Sometimes Say Polo
ARGENTINA > We couldn’t find any information on their website, and the last time they made mention of volunteering that we could find on their own social media dates to 2012. But, last year, Argentina Polo Day told Voluntouring.org that they would love to hear from people with at least three months to spare, who are fluent in Spanish and English, and interested in working hard and learning about polo. They offer food and accommodation and accept volunteers year round. Another polo club and cattle ranch offering working holidays via HelpStay may also be of interest.

⭐️Camping Babsita
COSTA RICA > We recently saw Camping Babsita looking for responsible and positive volunteers to help maintain their campground on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica for at least one month from April until June. They are currently recruiting for a sea urchin and sea grass research project leader to work at their Silba marine site in Croatia. This volunteer position will run for six to eight weeks in June, July and August. Applicants must be qualified to PADI divemaster or equivalent and have a relevant academic background.
They also have a full time paid vacancy in their Lincolnshire offices for an expedition travel coordinator.
⭐️Trail Riding Guides
ARGENTINA > Every year, Estancia Los Potreros, in the Sierras Chicas of Córdoba, takes on a team of volunteer guides who help with tasks ranging from taking out guests on rides to cooking breakfast and serving aperol spritzes on the veranda. They usually want them to begin in September. In the past, when they’ve advertised in JAB, they have declared these guides should be excellent horse riders, aged 21+, sociable and available for between three and six months.
The positions are unpaid, but the estancia covered transport to and from Buenos Aires, all food, drink and accommodation. Volunteers also got their share of tips and Spanish lessons. They don’t have a dedicated page for volunteers, but this social media post from a couple of years ago confirms much of what we’ve written above and is accompanied by some nice photos and their contact email.
During the summer (December to March), Estancia Ranquilco have a few paid positions available for people with applicable skillsets, as well as several work-trade positions. These include horse guides with a very strong riding background.
Horses and Huskies might be another option in Patagonia. While their website doesn’t give away any information on volunteering with them, Sara Burdick wrote on Medium in 2021 that she volunteered off-grid there for two months.
⭐️Host And Visual Storyteller Wanted For A Ranch In The Andes Of Northern Patagonia
ARGENTINA > The host and visual storyteller vacancy at Estancia Ranquilco looks interesting. Ideal candidates for this should be outgoing, conversational, and detail oriented, with a natural gift for hospitality. Prior experience in the hospitality industry is a plus. English fluency is required, Spanish proficiency is a strong bonus, and demonstrated experience creating thoughtful, story driven social media content is essential. Estancia Ranquilco’s 2026/27 vacancies should be online around about now.
Staff here are housed in rustic accommodations, generally in a shared room. Meals are prepared in an outdoor kitchen and shared communally. A laundry machine is available at the volunteer house, and there is limited satellite internet available for use.
⭐️More Volunteering Opportunities With Horses In Patagonia
CHILE > More volunteering opportunities with horses can be found across Argentina’s border with Chile. As a volunteer with Galope Austral, 25 minutes from Puerto Natale, you’ll be involved in daily tasks: looking for the herd in the morning, caring for and saddling horses, assisting with guided trail rides, and supporting endurance training or multi-day treks. You’ll live with them in an off-grid cabin and become part of the rural life of Torres del Paine, learning its customs and the authentic gaucho way of life. The next selection for volunteers with extensive experience with horses takes place in June. More information on volunteering there can also be read in Hooves Around the World.
Another Patagonian horse ranch volunteer programme can be read about in the Newcastle University student publication, The Courier. The subject here is Estancia La Peninsula. Applications for this year should open this month. Hacienda Parga offers immersive tours and classes to hotel guests within a private reserve in the Lake District region. They accept horse lovers to help with chores that include the care and handling of 11 horses, using Workaway to recruit their volunteers, three of which were Bea, Ben and Ella from the UK.
A slightly different option in the region, but one that included horses, was put forward by Club Baguales last year. They wanted motivated and nature loving volunteers to join them at a family run countryside club just outside Puerto Varas. They wanted help with, among other tasks, horse care and polo horse training for a minimum of four weeks and might want the same again this year.

We said the same thing last year, but this time we’re actually going to add a link to their volunteer page.
⭐️Cheapest Workforce In The Field
UK > In one of our posts in the March issue of JAB, centred around volunteering at music festivals, we were a little irked that Festaff demands a £10/15 admin fee per event from volunteers already helping their business by putting in a minimum of two eight hour shifts per festival. An anonymous participant in the Music Festival Volunteers & Staff Community (UK) Facebook group goes further, calling working for a ticket a system that extracts free labour at scale.

SOUTH AMERICA > Matt and Liuan travel with three rambunctious boys. Among their slow travels were stops to volunteer with farms in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador.
⭐️Free Dogs
GUATEMALA > Rarely a day goes by when we at JAB don’t exclaim free dog! in response to our neighbour’s dog asleep on our doorstep. We do no more with Maggie than stand around in the garden barking and waving a colourful fly swatter to keep her entertained. Or going for a walk after lurking at the bottom of the drive, performatively shouting so our neighbours can hear: “No Maggie. You can’t come with us,” knowing full well she will, regardless of our or their thoughts on the matter. At Perros Libres, a non profit that rescues dogs from the streets of Tzununa, we’re sure they do a lot more than we do to keep the a lot more dogs that turn up at their door happy. This is why they often need volunteers.
Mayan Dog Rescue Foundation is another option for dog lovers heading to Antigua. Alyce Devlin is based near there, too. Take a look at her Workaway profile and get in touch with her there or via her Facebook profile.
⭐️The Wigtown Festival Company In Wigtown
UK > Both Rowena Harding and JAB thought on first glance that this was a wonderful chance to volunteer to run a bookshop in Scotland in exchange for free board. JAB’s great name radar also got excited because the not bookshop volunteering opportunity is in a place called Wigtown, a town and former royal burgh in Wigtownshire.
Sadly, we can’t volunteer in a bookshop in Wigtown (at least not for accommodation anyway), but the Wigtown Festival Company does put on a book festival, the second largest in Scotland, for which volunteers able to accommodate themselves can help as drivers, event stewards, event hosts, volunteers for their children’s and young people’s programmes, and festival bookshop assistants.

Red Tape
JAB is thrown together quickly on a shoestring and contains information and advertising that we believe is authentic and currently available. However, we recommend checking things out for yourselves, as we could be wrong about everything. We remind our readers that there are many scams on the internet aimed at people looking for work abroad, and suggest reading our Warnings, Safety and Spotting Scams pages.
