We know these emails can be long, but we want to send as many global vacancies to you as we can. Don’t forget to view the entire message if you are reading this via email. If you are not reading this by email, why not give it a go?👇

⭐️Intrepid Tour Leader
USA > Applications are open until August 15 for a tour leader position with Intrepid Travel running tours through the United States. Potential leaders for other regions can find out more here and register their interest when positions become available.
⭐️Go Penguins
CHILE > By becoming a Go Penguins volunteer, you will experience the amazing region of Valparaiso, meet great people, and enjoy Chilean traditional foods and drinks. Starting in December, your role will be to help prepare coolers with food and drinks for their tours, do some cleaning and, after learning the part, do some tour guiding. See their TripAdvisor listing for more details about the enterprise and where you’ll stay.
⭐️Aid Animals In Morocco
MOROCCO > Morocco Animal Aid was recently on social media to entice volunteers to the south of the country to help in their animal shelter. They were also hiring workers, though we can’t be sure if this too is for international applicants. We’ve mentioned MAA in a back issue of JAB, where we feature another couple of animal welfare organisations in Morocco.
⭐️Critter Care In Canada
CANADA > We spotted a listing for Critter Care Wildlife Society, a non profit wildlife charity in British Columbia, Canada, on Voluntouring.org. CCWS rely heavily on interns, especially in Spring during baby season when up to 25 interns care for hundreds of baby animals. Currently, they are accepting applications for the remainder of 2024 and into 2025 with an emphasis on this August and September due to low numbers. The minimum stay is four weeks and a small admin fee and a returnable deposit are expected.
⭐️Run A Conservation NGO In Sumatra
INDONESIA > Due to health issues, the founder of a conservation NGO in North Sumatra is looking for someone passionate (link to private group) about flora and fauna to take over the running of the Indonesian Species Conservation Program. Volunteers who contribute to their accommodation can also stay here but, be warned, according to their volunteer page, your volunteer status can be revoked for substance abuse, unspecified immoral acts and “carrying out terrorist activities and the like.”
⭐️Join An International Team Of Like Minded People With A Passion For The Mountain
FRANCE > If you like good food, live music and dancing on tables then Smithy's Tavern could be the place for you. They appear to still have some vacancies for the 24/25 season within their international team from Australia to Denmark and everywhere in between - though probably not Brits as they cannot accept UK passports.
⭐️Free Gap Year
UK > Get on your way to becoming an outdoor instructor by joining a free 12 month voluntary gap year scheme. Training, food and accommodation and a subsistence allowance are included.
⭐️Tumbleweeding Is Back
FRANCE > Paris bookshop Shakespeare And Company has restarted its Tumbleweed programme - paused during recent building works - offering a unique opportunity to stay at a bookshop in the heart of Paris and to contribute to the city’s rich and extensive literary culture.
The programme began when George Whitman opened the English language bookshop in 1951. Wishing to repay the generosity he encountered during his own journeys during the Great Depression, the store has since offered shelter among the bookshelves to an estimated 30,000 people.
Today, successful applicants have use of an ensuite studio room within the bookshop building, filled with books should you be in need of literary inspiration. Typically, successful applicants will stay a minimum of one week and a maximum of one month, helping to set up and support weekly events but are mostly free to fill their days in the studio as they choose. Hopefully, the space will be conducive to many productive hours working on your writing project and reading.
⭐️Which Australian Ski Resort Is Best?
AUSTRALIA > Katie Gale Fran’s question to anyone who has done a ski season in Australia on which resort to choose met with a helpful response in the Ski & Snowboard Jobs Facebook group from Lachlan Ferguson. He suggests Mt Buller for village vibes, with the bonus it’s close to just about everything so it's not a marathon to do a supply run, though it can get crowded. There is plenty of work there, the people are great, and you'll never get bored.
Hotham is best for an outright snow experience at the cost of a village vibe - “It's basically a resort wrapped around a highway” - but the snow is terrific, the terrain is steep and, if you don't care about convenience and that village vibe, is in his opinion the best mountain in Victoria hands down.
For town vibes, Thredbo and Perisher are his choices, going on to say Thredbo has limited staff accommodation within the resort compared to other mountains but they did expand it a few years ago. Perisher has no in-resort staff accommodation, so they all stay In Jindabyne. Iain Lygo chips in that Thredbo and Perisher are OK if you get an employee bed, but they just don't have that many. The Victorian resorts have much better housing than the NSW ones. Over the next few years Buller, Falls Creek and Hotham will be getting more employee beds.
Selwyn Snow Resort in NSW didn’t get mentioned but we recently saw an ad looking for casuals to join their team of lift operators for an immediate start.
⭐️Kangaroo Au Pair
AUSTRALIA > Since she began a retreat in her backyard in 2010, Lisa's Kangaroo Retreat in Port Hedland, WA, has rescued, rehabilitated and released 867 joeys into their natural habitat. Volunteers play an important role in this, helping in a variety of roles according to their skills and interests. Previous volunteers have said it was their best experience in Australia, going on to say accommodation and food are provided for working around five hours a day, along with the use of a car for exploring the area however, it does not count towards regional work. An application form can be found on their website, though this Facebook post from last year provides better information on volunteering there.
⭐️Replacement Bus Boy Service
AUSTRALIA > Luna Cami is helping her boss hire her replacement when she leaves her middle of the desert roadhouse job near Coober Pedy. Despite our post title, a woman with hospitality experience is preferred. The job consists of running the shop/gas station, making coffee, running the bar, servicing the restaurant and sometimes housekeeping or cooking. In short, it's very diversified and you need to know how to manage everything. Luna says the people there are lovely and very nice and the bosses are honest and treat their employees like family. Accommodation is provided.
Christa Dirix is also helping her boss find new staff for a historic pub on the border of Queensland and NSW.
⭐️Australian Fruit Picking Calendars
AUSTRALIA > Grapes in Orange, citrus in Berri, berries in Ballina, vine pruning in Young, mangoes in Darwin, vegetables in Ayr, strawberries in Cabooture, melons in Emerald, and bananas in Tully, are just some of the harvests going on right now or coming up soon across Australia that are likely to have a high demand for workers. More harvest starts and ends can be found in the Backpacker Job Board’s Harvest Calendar or Australia Backpackers Guide’s Australian Fruit Picking Calendar.
⭐️Fruit Packing Jobs Near Darwin
AUSTRALIA > Berry Creek Packing offers seasonal work to people who can commit to staying for the whole season of approximately ten to 12 weeks. Depending on seasonal conditions, work should start in mid August until mid November. Duties may include sorting and packing fruit, loading fruit into bins, placing stickers on fruit, stacking boxes, completing paperwork, cleaning work and amenity areas, working with machinery etc.
⭐️Experienced Housekeeper Wanted On Norfolk Island
AUSTRALIA > Norfolk Island, a tiny Australian island in the South Pacific Ocean, is defined by pine trees and jagged cliffs, it says here. The main language on Norfolk Island is English, but some Norfolk Islanders speak the local language Norf'k, a mix of Tahitian and Old English passed down from the Bounty mutineers. One of the hotels there, Governor’s Lodge Resort is seeking personalities who are passionate about delivering memorable guest experiences in a remote and unique location. Working on Norfolk Island in the tourism/hospitality field is eligible for second and third year WHV extensions and applicants must be able to commit to a minimum four to six month stay.
⭐️Hostel Helper
AUSTRALIA > Port Macquarie Backpackers is looking for a volunteer housekeeper/cleaner to do some general cleaning and housekeeping for around two or three hours a day, six days per week in return for accommodation. They say it’s not hard work: “it's all pretty cruisy, just stuff you would be doing at your own home really.” Other vacancies are listed on their website.
⭐️Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Dolphin Poo But Were Afraid To Ask
AUSTRALIA > We saved this post from last year by the Dolphin Discovery Centre on the digestive process of dolphins because a) good things come to those who wait b) we’ve got to get our kicks from somewhere and c) it’s a good hook to hang information on volunteering with the centre in Bunbury, Western Australia, where the main requirements are to be confident in speaking to the public, having a conversational level of English language, being able to work as part of a team and having a big smile. It should be noted that while volunteering with the Dolphin Discovery Centre is free of charge, they do not provide food or accommodation.
⭐️Hostel Volunteering Leads In Essaouira
MOROCCO > Guests staying with Berber Hostel have referred to volunteers on Booking.com, with one saying they were very grateful for them for creating such a comfortable environment. They don’t have a website but if you are in the area visit them at 1601 Rue Sidi Abdesmih, 44000 Essaouira to see if they need anyone. We also found frequent mentions of international volunteers present at The Chill Art Hostel and one very brief request for a volunteer placed on the Facebook page of Essaouira Youth Hostel & Social Travel.
Diabat Hostel, a little to the south of the city, is another possibility. Again, no website but their location is given in their Hostelworld listing and we are pretty sure this is them on Workaway. Dar Iziki is also on Workaway but non members can find their phone number and email address via their website.
The Hangry Backpacker reports that The Essaouira Beach Hostel has the occasional backpacker on an extended stay helping out there. More in depth information can be found on the free to use Laulima Travels, who handily mentioned three more hostel work exchanges elsewhere in Morocco on their Instagram recently.
And last year while staying at Dar Antonio, a guest house close to the main square in Chefchaouen, we spoke with the owner who suggested he may be open to having a volunteer helping out around the place. Jen Eggener volunteered with the nearby Riad Baraka Hostel, and the Ali Baba Apartment Hostel have used their Instagram to call for volunteers. At the time, they were accommodating volunteers from England, Italy, Germany, and Hungary.
