FINLAND > We are in Turkey for the summer and already thinking of delaying our return to Northern Ireland which could mean we get back too late in time to plant potatoes for Christmas. I haven’t a clue if it is or not to be honest but after casually expressing an interest in the garden and dumbly asking if Ireland is a good place to grow potatoes two big sacks of soil appeared and something needs to be done with them. How far we’ve come since this publication was described as a young, opinionated rag in the Daily Telegraph.
All these thoughts of Turkey, sacks and Christmas brings us neatly to one of our favourite options for working abroad this winter: heading to Finnish Lapland for a six week winter season as part of Santa’s crew.

Contract dates run between November 17 and January 4. GREECE > Caveland, a swimming pool toting hostel in Karterados, in the middle of Santorini, has a position for one volunteer to stay for six to eleven weeks this summer and autumn. Duties will be daily from 8am to 11am with a small amount of pocket money, accommodation and breakfast offered in return. If you miss out, keep an eye on their Facebook page as they often announce their volunteer needs there.

⭐️Teach English In Nong Khiaw
LAOS > We heard mention of NK Seeds via Craig, a YouTuber who with his partner Molly found himself stuck in the country during lockdown. Started by a young French woman they run two projects dependent on volunteers in Nong Khiaw: an English School, and waste paper and plastic recycling. bungalow accommodation is provided with breakfast and lunch on teaching days, or there’s a common kitchen to prepare food bought in the local markets. Some of the restaurants in the area provide discounts to their volunteers. One volunteer made this video about her experience.
⭐️Explore The North As A Husky Handler
SWEDEN > Around 150 seasonal workers staff Explore the North’s five lodges in Swedish Lapland. They are hiring activity guides, chefs, waiting and housekeeping staff and, our favourites, husky guides and husky handlers. While other positions are paid, the husky guide role is a volunteer one suitable if you love the outdoors, animals and challenging yourself every day. ⭐️Chef/Cook To Join The Team On Norfolk Island
AUSTRALIA > The struggle is real recruiting chefs these days, says Nicholas Root who is looking for one at the Olive Cafe on Norfolk Island, a two and a half hour flight from either Brisbane or Sydney. He also says this position will allow you to save a ton of money whilst experiencing a unique part of Australia. Starts early July for a minimum of three months.
⭐️Sea Turtles And Wallabies
AUSTRALIA > Sea turtles AND wallabies? Fuck. Off! I’m sending my application in now and so should you as Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre doesn’t take live in volunteers year round. The next opportunity according to Kim van Oudheusden, the general manager at the facility, is February 14.

Birthright Armenia - At least one grandparent must be fully Armenian to qualify for this year round volunteer programme giving Diasporan Armenians, aged 21 to 32, the opportunity to connect to their ancestral homeland. Participants commit to at least 30 hours of volunteering per week while living with a local host family. Taglit Birthright Israel - Over 800,000 young adults from all over the world have been to Israel on Taglit trips. For seven to ten days participants explore the beaches, deserts, food and ancient sites of Israel. EUROPE > Since 2017, Collective Aid have welcomed over 1,600 passionate and committed volunteers from all over the world wanting to support people on the move. Language skills are an advantage here: they especially encourage applications from volunteers who speak Serbo-Croat-Bosnian, French, Pashto, Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Turkish, Urdu, Hindi, Tigrinya, Amharic, Oromo, Thai, Vietnamese, and Punjabi.
Most of their shorter term volunteers will be working on the ground in their various projects, usually in Bosnia, Serbia and France. MOROCCO > Jen Eggener volunteered with Riad Baraka Hostel in Chefchaouen, writing about her time in this small city in the Rif Mountains of Northwest Morocco on her blog. There her duties included serving breakfast, working reception, and chatting with the guests. In exchange you will get a free bed in the dorm and what she describes as an amazing free breakfast each day. Their social media is out of date and website absent so arrangements might best be made by staying there a night or two as a guest and enquiring with the British owner on the spot. ⭐️101 Outback Roadhouses in Australia
AUSTRALIA > Wendy Rodwell, a moderator of the private Australian Independent Backpackers group, shared this map of over 100 roadhouses dotted around Australia. She says not only are they pretty handy for anyone who's travelling and needs to plan their fuel stops, but also a good source of jobs and most of them are eligible for the 88 days of regional work needed to extend a working holiday visa.
⭐️Your Misión, If You Choose To Accept It, Is To Surf
MEXICO > Misión Surf is a social impact hotel and surf school, created to generate self-sustainable income for Mision Mexico Foundation and provide community outreach support to the youth and families of Puerto Madero. They are looking for individuals with experience in teaching swimming and surfing to bring excitement and energy to their youth community classes and public surf lessons. Private beach front accommodation and one meal a day is provided in return for 25 hours per week for a minimum of two months.
Related is The Misión México Casa. They accept volunteers during the Christmas, Easter, and Summer school holidays to facilitate specialised workshops and courses with the children and youth in their care. They are looking for passionate people to join their Enrichment Volunteer Program and lead activities and workshops based on their skills and expertise. 25 hours per week is exchanged for one meal per day and shared accommodation in a four bedroom flat. MEDITERRANEAN > A 35m vessel currently based in the South of France with plans to cruise the Mediterranean extensively for the duration of the Summer season before returning to Monaco is hoping to take on a new deckhand. Unfortunately, greenies can not be considered for this role as the ideal candidate will be someone who has preferably six months to one year of experience within the yachting industry on similar sized vessels.
⭐️Last Minute Crew Wanted To Cross The Atlantic
AT SEA > Three girls and an experienced captain, owner of a 40ft catamaran, have put out a short notice call for an English speaking crew member to help get them from Sint Maarten to the Azores and then on to France. There’s some whinging in the comments about needing to contribute towards food and fuel costs - around 250/300 euros for two and a half to three weeks of sailing - but that is not uncommon for this sort of thing.
Another boat owner is planning to move from Florida to Mexico at the end of June and is looking for someone to keep him company on the trip.

Roles such as cleaning the paddocks and stables, feeding and grooming the donkeys, plus the important pooper scooper position, are dished out by Amaya who, after 20 years of sailing the seven seas, returned to Spain to found her haven for discarded, used and abused donkeys. UK > The Danny is powered by two things - steam and volunteers. The Daniel Adamson, to give the vessel its formal name, is a 1903 steamship with a history so important she’s on the National Historic Ships register in the same category as the Cutty Sark. Emptying his pockets of change, the Danny was bought for £1 by Dan Cross off of a scrap dealer in 2004 on condition he got the former passenger boat off the canal and out of their hair. Every role on the ship is undertaken by a volunteer crew: bridge, deck, engine/boiler room, stewarding and the galley/bars.

⭐️Volunteering At The Charles Dickens Museum
UK > The Charles Dickens Museum celebrates the life and works of Dickens, the 19th century author of A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol. Located in London at 48 Doughty Street, the museum was Dickens’s home from 1837 until 1839 when he moved out to seek more space for his growing family. Both Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby were written here.
Volunteers carry out much of the work at the museum and applicants are welcomed to apply to support the museum’s various activities. Depending on your skills and experience, tasks may include working in the museum and shop, publicity and marketing, conservation and librarianship, organising events, administration, cleaning or providing refreshments for group visitors. Positions are unpaid but basic expenses of lunch and travel will be covered.
