⭐️Remote Work In The South Atlantic
BRITISH OVERSEAS TERRITORY OF SAINT HELENA, ASCENSION AND TRISTAN DA CUNHA > A remote volcanic outpost in the South Atlantic, somewhere between Africa and South America, St Helena is one of the last specks remaining of the British Empire and most famous as the place of Napoleon Bonaparte's final exile and death. There, the St Helena National Trust needs a project manager and is unsurprisingly looking overseas for candidates, who have until April 14 to decide if this adventure is for them.
Nowhere near but within the same administrative group of islands, uninhabited Gough Island is widely considered one of the world’s most important seabird breeding sites. The RSPB wants to place a field officer there for 13 months (plus two months of training) to carry out bird monitoring and other field work. The ideal candidate will be able to cope with tasks that include sharing cooking and cleaning duties in communal living quarters and will be experienced in remote and challenging field conditions. ⭐️Wildlife Volunteering In South Africa
SOUTH AFRICA > Volunteering with wildlife can often come with hefty fees but three options in South Africa with reasonable rates are the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), Drakenstein Lion Park, and Bambelela Wildlife Rehab and Vervet Monkey Rehabilitation Facility.
Bambelela, located 20km out of Bela Bela in Limpopo, couldn’t cope without their South African and international volunteers - students, young people and the not so young - who stay with them for a minimum of two weeks. Expect to end each day dirty and exhausted. “Monkey blessings” is the term they use for getting urinated and pooped on.
Offering a great opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to get involved in true wildlife conservation, rehabilitation and release, volunteers work directly alongside the experienced wildlife staff and will be trained in all aspects of primate care, including acting as “surrogate parents” to orphaned baby monkeys, introducing juvenile monkeys to existing troops at the sanctuary, and preparing established troops for release. Long term volunteers may even get to experience living at the release site and monitoring the progress of the newly released troop. Their rates start at around US$280 per week, falling for longer stays.
For CROW, a wildlife hospital caring for up to 400 injured and orphaned wild animals and birds in Kwazulu Natal, feeding and caring for so many animals on a daily basis is no small task, which is why the skills, experience and enthusiasm of both local and international volunteers are welcomed at its centre. Located in a lush suburb of Durban, 15 minutes drive from the beach, accommodation, food and non-alcoholic drinks are provided for around $28 daily for the first month, with rates falling for longer stays.
Drakenstein Lion Park was established near Paarl, in Western Cape province, in 1998 to provide lions in distress with sanctuary, where they could live in safety, free from abuse and persecution, and be treated with the compassion and respect they deserved.
Volunteer duties revolve mostly around preparing food for the lions, cleaning, clearing vegetation, fence and firebreak maintenance. Summer volunteers may have to do a bit of fire fighting. Volunteers should have a basic understanding of English, be at least 18 years of age and reasonably fit.
Accommodation is shared rooms with a communal kitchen and recreation room. A short distance away are the lion and chimp enclosures, so volunteers will have the added bonus of hearing the lions roar every night. Fees work out at around $280 for two weeks and volunteers are responsible for supplying and preparing their own meals.

With many skippers wanting an extra pair of hands and eyes onboard this is a great way for even those with minimal experience at sea to get a free passage (though a contribution towards your expenses is often asked) from the Americas to Europe.
The old fashioned way to land a passage is to head to a favourable port and do the dock walk, going from boat to boat and asking captains direct but another way is to use Findacrew.net. The website lists both paid and unpaid berths, with details on the experience required and whether a contribution towards expenses is asked for.

⭐️Working Abroad Ideas For Curious Humans
WORLDWIDE > With the hope we could instead skive off and head down the pub attend to some of our many cherished and vintage unanswered emails, we asked an AI to write this issue of the Jobs Abroad Bulletin newsletter, including links to current job vacancies for backpackers and working travellers.
“Dear Backpackers and Working Travellers,” it politely began. “We hope this newsletter finds you well and that you are enjoying your adventures abroad. As promised, we have compiled a list of exciting job opportunities for those of you who are looking to earn some extra cash during your travels.”
OK, we usually jump straight in without an introduction. Getting the neighbour’s dog to stand still long enough so we can exploit her image for our house sitting ad takes up that time. The sheep posing for this month’s cover picture were far less troublesome. So then, what jobs did our tame AI find for us?
First up is a vacancy for a resort host in Greece. “Are you looking for a job that lets you soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful beaches of Greece? This resort host position may be just what you're looking for. The job involves greeting guests, helping with check-ins and check-outs, and providing assistance during their stay. You'll also have plenty of time to explore the island and enjoy the local culture.”
Great, we thought and were impressed by the use of word contractions. Data from Star Trek couldn’t do that and he’s from the future. Except the link given is a page not found. Muggins here will have to poozle around the internet for an alternative. Neilson is already oversubscribed for 2023 - so we’ll save them for next year - but, on the day we began writing this issue (longer ago than we expected), Alpine Elements were advertising a different position in another country: a summer resort manager in France.
“If you have a passion for teaching and exploring new cultures, consider teaching English in China,” suggests ChatGPT. This position offers competitive pay and benefits, as well as the opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese culture. You'll be responsible for teaching English to students of all ages, and you'll have plenty of support from your fellow teachers and school administration.” Again, the vacancy, on Teachaway, isn’t at the end of the link given but try these ones instead - which may or may not have supportive teachers and administration staff - from the same website.
“Australia is known for its vibrant nightlife and exciting bar scene. If you have experience in bartending, consider applying for a position at a popular bar or restaurant in one of Australia's major cities. You'll meet locals and travellers from all over the world, and you'll have the chance to explore Australia during your time off.” Finding an up to date bar job in Australia was surprisingly difficult but you’ll certainly meet people from all around the world working in a cafe at Sydney Airport.
South Africa is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes and wildlife in the world but as soon as we saw the title for its fourth choice, working as a tour guide in South Africa, we knew we would be hitting a dud link and we would have to do the leg work ourselves. We’re this AI’s human little bitches and it knows it.
Looking after bitches and whatever man dogs are called is probably a more realistic option for working with animals in South Africa, so check out Helping All Animals in Rural Towns (HAART) or email HAART.HelpingAllAnimals@gmail.com for information on volunteering.
HAART also works with Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre, which has a paid for volunteer programme designed to give volunteers a genuine understanding of the rescue, rehabilitation, rewilding, and release processes, for a variety of wild animals. We’ve also add more options for wildlife volunteering in South Africa in its own section above.
Finally, it generically suggested we consider the role of hostel receptionist in Spain and linked to a jobs page on Hostelworld that hasn’t existed since 2009 and didn’t then carry a position for a hostel receptionist in Spain anyway. Sigh! The Feet Up Hostels group offers an internship to work in Spain and learn Spanish.
“We hope you find these job opportunities exciting and that they inspire you to continue your adventures abroad,” it penultimately sentenced before wishing us all happy travels - even though we suspect it means this. “If you have any questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.” And by us, it clearly means me.
